BIOCAN Project

BIOCAN project is implemented through partnership between Faculty of Medicine of the University of Montenegro and the Faculty for Information Systems and Technologies, University Donja Gorica. The project is funded by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Innovation, grant number 04-082/23-2523/1.

The focus of the BIOCAN project is the identification of new, reliable biomarkers for the early detection of colorectal cancer, in order to improve the prognosis and treatment outcome of these patients. To this end, in this project we will examine the combination of specific biochemical and molecular biomarkers from blood, pathohistological features from tissue, together with relevant demographic and clinical data, regarding their ability to distinguish between healthy and cancer participants.

In combination with existing screening methods, new safe, non-invasive, and highly specific and sensitive biomarkers can increase their diagnostic accuracy, and therefore enable earlier disease detection and help reduce the burden on the healthcare system. All data within the project will be collected in a structured and organized manner, in order to enable the establishment of the first cancer biobank in Montenegro, which will represent a platform for innovative biomedical research, especially regarding the development of personalized medicine approaches.
